Police: D.C. United fans attacked opposing teams fans after game
WASHINGTON (FOX 5 DC) - A D.C. Police report describes a seemingly unprovoked attack where nearly a dozen D.C. United fans punched, kicked and shoved a group of Seattle Sounders fans after a game Sunday night.
Police have not made any arrests in the case or identified any suspects.
The attack happened after 11 p.m. Sunday night.
According to a source familiar with what happened, the Seattle Sounders fans, who were apart of a traveling fan group called The Emerald City Supporters, were heading to a nearby bar. D.C. United fans approached and tried to steal flags and scarves from the Seattle fans while physically fighting with the group.
The source tells FOX 5 one of the Seattle fans required surgery.
D.C. United said it followed league protocol in holding the Seattle fan group until 20 minutes after the game and providing an escort out of the stadium.
In a statement, the team said in part, "Fan safety is our top priority and we are committed to eradicating any violence in or around the stadium. Confrontational behavior will not be tolerated at D.C. United games..."
The team says it is looking at video along with police to help identify the suspects.
