WASHINGTON, D.C. - An 18-year-old is in custody after police say he ran towards the Capitol Building on Tuesday, armed with a loaded shotgun and wearing a tactical vest.
What we know:
The suspect parked a white Mercedes SUV on the 100 block of Maryland Avenue around noon before getting out of his vehicle with a shotgun and running toward the Capitol Building.
He was quickly taken into custody after being stopped by officers and ordered to drop his weapon and get on the ground.
The area near the west entrance of the Capitol was shut down as police investigated the scene, but has since re-opened.

In addition to the tactical vest and loaded shotgun, police say a Kevlar helmet and a gas mask were found inside his vehicle.
He was also carrying additional shotgun rounds on his person as he attempted to run toward the Capitol.
What we don't know:
The identity of the suspect has yet to be released, along with a possible motive. Police say the investigation is ongoing.
