Montgomery County Acting Police Chief Marcus Jones to be nominated to lead department

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich announced Monday that he plans to nominate the Acting Police Chief Marcus Jones to take over the position. Jones has been with the department for 34 years.

When the former Police Chief Tom Manger retired, Jones put his hat in the ring but was passed over. Elrich made it clear he was looking for someone outside of the department.

Over the past few months, Takoma Park’s Police Chief Antonio DeVaul and Tonya Chapman from Portsmouth, Virginia, were both announced as finalists but fell through.

A spokesperson said Elrich was unavailable to talk with FOX 5 Monday night.

According to sources, Jones has the support of many within the police department.

The Montgomery County Council will have to approve Jones. Nancy Navarro, the council president, said in her opinion Jones has always been a strong contender and she believes he will be a transformational leader.
