Laundry detergent pods more dangerous to children than other types of detergent

Laundry detergent packets are more dangerous to children under 6-years-old than other types of detergent, a new study says. Data gathered from calls to Poison Control Centers across the U.S., from 2013 to 2014, show a 17 percent increase in calls related to emergencies involving the packet detergents.

Emergency calls related to dishwasher packets increased by 14 percent during the same time.

The research was published online this week in the journal Pediatrics.

The journal said that in that time frame, 104 children who required intubation had been exposed to laundry detergent packets. There were also two deaths, both associated with laundry detergent packets.
