Iron Gideon: Little boy battling cancer proposes to favorite hospital nurse
SAN DIEGO - It was at 5 years old that little Gideon Robinson became a superhero.
In 2015, Gideon was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and is being treated in San Diego at Rady Children's Hospital. To help him brave his treatments, Gideon's parents gave him the spirit of Iron Gideon, modeled after Iron Man. The port surgically implanted in his chest not only administered his chemotherapy treatments, it administered his new superhero power: confidence.
As he spent time in the hospital, Gideon developed a bond with his favorite nurse, he called Tall Sarah. Tall Sarah would visit Gideon, play with him, and spoil him.
Gideon then got the idea to 'marry' his favorite nurse in a conversation with his mother. After finding out Tall Sarah was indeed single, Gideon knew he wanted to ask her himself.
After receiving arts and crafts supplies, Gideon created an engagement ring for his favorite nurse out of beads and pipe cleaners. The moment was planned, and caught on video.
Marriage proposal to his favorite nurse on the hem/onc floor... "tall Sarah"
"How are you going to ask her? What do you plan to do?" Gideon is asked on the video, that's now going viral. He then gets on one knee, and says "Sarah!" as he opens the ring box.
When it was time for the big moment, Gideon was ready. Tall Sarah is surprised, and asks "What's going on?" as Gideon is surrounded by hospital staff. "Do you want to have a dance party?" she asks.
Gideon gets down on one knee, and asks "Will you marry me?"
Much to her surprise, Tall Sarah responds with a resounding, "Of course! You can be my hospital husband!"
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help with Gideon's medical expenses. Gideon's strong will and determination continues to be an inspiration for his family.
