Gun-toting Amtrak passenger headed to Virginia identified as Florida man

Jeffrey Owen Kennerk, 34, of Fort Lauderdale, FL. 

Authorities have identified the man arrested earlier this month on a Virginia-bound Amtrak train for allegedly possessing multiple firearms. 

Jeffrey Owen Kennerk, 34, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, has been charged with five counts of second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon and one count of second-degree possession of a weapon, according to New Jersey Transit Police.

Amtrak passenger arrested on Virginia-bound train; guns found at Newark Station

A man traveling on a Virginia-bound Amtrak train was arrested Friday after New Jersey Transit Police discovered firearms in an unattended bag at Newark Penn Station.

Officers found a handgun and a loaded rifle in the bag and determined the owner had purchased a ticket for a train heading to Virginia.

What we don't know:

Officials have not clearly stated what Kennerk's intentions were with the firearms. They have not disclosed where he was going, either. 

Train stopped in Trenton; suspect arrested

The train was halted in Trenton, where officers confronted Kennerk. Authorities say the suspect resisted arrest but was eventually taken into custody. 

A subsequent search revealed he was carrying three additional handguns and two rifles.

Train cleared of threats, investigation ongoing

A K9 unit cleared the train for further threats after the arrest, briefly delaying the trip before it resumed its journey to Virginia. The New Jersey Transit Police Department continues to lead the investigation, with further updates pending.
