An elderly woman in Virginia was killed after a tree fell on her home while she slept early Monday morning as a powerful storm moved across the region.

Authorities say they were called to a home on Doyle Place in Stafford County around 1:43 a.m. for a rescue call. They found the 78-year-old woman pinned underneath a tree that crashed into the home. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

An 82-year-old man, identified as the woman's husband, was also sleeping inside the home and was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident is still under investigation.
