ANNAPOLIS, Md. - If you are heading to the beaches along the Delaware, Maryland and Virginia shores this holiday weekend - you won't be alone!
AAA Mid-Atlantic says nearly three million people in the D.C., Maryland and Virginia region will travel 50 or more miles this Memorial Day and many of them are expected to make a dash for the coast.
Route 50, one of the main roadways to Ocean City through Maryland, is expected to be a major chokepoint for traffic. The Maryland Transportation Authority estimates that more than 348,000 motorists will cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge over the weekend. They say the best travel times across the bridge are Friday before 10 a.m. and after 10 p.m., on Saturday before 7 a.m. and after 5 p.m., and on Sunday and Monday before 10 a.m. and after 10 p.m.
The Virginia Department of Transportation says periods of moderate to heavy congestion are expected to occur between noon and 6 p.m. on Friday and Monday, and during midday on Saturday and Sunday.
They say the heaviest of the traffic occurs along Interstate 95 south and Interstate 64 east from Saturday morning to Saturday afternoon and from Interstate 95 north and Interstate 64 west on Monday from around noon to late evening.
