A Dallas Police officer is giving back to the neighborhood that raised him.
Officer Lamar Glass III is a regular around the Buckner Terrace Neighborhood, but arrived on Sunday with a big Thanksgiving giveaway.
"This is home for me. I don't see myself being anywhere else," said Officer Glass.
He knows Buckner Terrace like the back of his hand.
"I stayed on Lomex, I stayed on Burr Ridge, I stayed on Urban Avenue, is stayed on Simpson. I used to walk to this park every day," he said.
Officer Glass has been patrolling the streets in the neighborhood he grew up in since he started the job six years ago, but he says a conversation one day gave him an idea,
"I had a kid one time that told me he had nothing to eat. It kind of, sometimes you try not to get too personal on the job but that kind of struck me," he said.
Officer Glass teamed up with the Buckner Terrace Neighborhood Association to collect donations from neighbors, other officers and local businesses.
"If I can be a part of changing lives by one meal or two meals or whatever, then I want to be a part of that,"
Sunday afternoon, Officer Glass, with a little help from his neighborhood, started giving back.
"A lot of us are low income and we may have some chicken and dressing but turkeys are more expensive so a lot of people can't afford that. I think it's wonderful to be able to bless people to have a real Thanksgiving," said community member Michelle Bell.
"It makes people feel good, you feel like someone cares," said Johnny Watkins.
This is the first year Officer Glass was able to do this turkey giveaway, and he says he hopes to continue with community outreach events in his neighborhood.
"If you find a passion, then just go after it no matter what it takes."
