ATLANTA - An Atlanta radio personality is using her wedding to give back to a cause that's near and dear to her heart.
The Bert Show's Kristin Klingshirn and her fiance, Bart Mattingly, recently announced they would be donating their wedding registry items to Bert's Big Adventure (BBA), a nonprofit organization that provides a magical, all-expenses-paid, five-day trip to Walt Disney World for children with chronic and terminal illnesses, as well as their families.
"We went to Target and had a field day, registering for toys for kids for the upcoming Bert's Big Adventure trip," Klingshirn told FOX 5's Paul Milliken last weekend.
A few of months ago, Klingshirn and Mattingly, who've been together for ten years, were discussing their registry, wondering if they really needed any items.
"We were good, so I was like, 'How about we dedicate the registry to BBA?'" Klingshirn said. "Of course my fiance, without hesitation, was like 'absolutely.'"
The couple said they still wanted to have the wedding registry experience, so they went to Target and scanned a bunch of items with several BBA kids.
"The Bert Show family has responded tremendously, exceeded every expectation," said Klingshirn. "We are blown away by their generosity."
As of Tuesday night, the total number of purchased gifts was at 3,260. Klingshirn and her soon-to-be husband have shared more than a dozen "box opening party" videos on Facebook, thanking everyone for purchasing items on the registry.
"I'm going to keep adding stuff," Klingshirn said during Monday night's box opening party. "We're going to shower these families with love, but also with lots of awesome, awesome gifts."
Not only does the registry include toys, but gifts for the children's parents. The gifts will be used on the annual Disney World trip and also for BBA's Fairy Godparent program.
"Anytime a BBA kid is in the hospital, a fairy godparent will visit and bring them a toy or something to help pass the time," Klingshirn said. "They did 300 visits alone to the hospital last year, so now we have all of them covered."
