Cat rescued after being thrown from moving vehicle on Woodrow Wilson Bridge

Officers rescued a cat Sunday after witnesses reported it was thrown from a moving vehicle while crossing the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.

A kitten was rescued Sunday after witnesses reported it was thrown from a moving vehicle on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, according to Maryland National Capital Park Police.

Officers said the kitten, who is between four and six weeks old, survived thanks to the quick actions of two good Samaritans who called for help.

What we know:

The kitten landed on a narrow ledge, about eight feet below the side of the bridge. The four-by-four ledge is located just beyond the pedestrian path and does not extend the length of the bridge, officials said, calling it  incredibly difficult to reach.

A responding officer said it took patience and a little cat food to get the kitten down.

"For a minute, I thought ‘What could I do?’" said Maryland National Capitol Park Police Corporal Christi Montgomery. "I had cat food in the cruiser, I laid on the bridge, I knew he was trying to get to me. I kept saying, ‘You can do it, you can do it.' My heart’s dropping thinking he’s not coming back, but he did and it was the craziest thing ever."

The incident occurred near National Harbor.

Corp. Montgomery said the two witnesses, including a man who was riding his bike across the bridge, flagged her down after seeing the kitten thrown from a vehicle.

Montgomery said the kitten was fortunate not to fall into traffic or into the Potomac River below.

"Three feet different, it never would have lived," she said. "It would have gone into the river. He was so scared. I was scared, but he's ok."

What's next:

The kitten is recovering at the Prince George's County Animal Shelter on Brown Station Road, officials said.

One of the good Samaritans, a man who was visiting from North Carolina, offered to pay some or all of the kitten's adoption fees for whoever decides to give him a home.

The incident is being investigated as animal cruelty. Police have not shared a description of the vehicle or suspects at this time.
