Divers searching Lake Ontario for a different sunken vessel unexpectedly discovered what’s believed to be a 200-year-old British shipwreck, remarkably preserved with its masts still standing beneath the waves.
Images captured both the newly discovered wreck and the team behind its find.
What they're saying:
The Jeff Lindsay team said its divers were surprised to "stumble upon" what they believe is a British ship dating back to the early 19th century, resting about 100 meters beneath the surface of Lake Ontario.
Lead exploration diver and Ontario Underwater Council President Heison Chak told reporters it’s "rare" to find a shipwreck with both its main and fore masts still intact, since those structures usually collapse over time.
Dig deeper:
The team had been searching for the wreck of the Rapid City — a vessel built in 1884 that sank near Toronto — when they unexpectedly discovered this one instead, according to the CBC.
