5 displaced after overnight fire damages apartment in DC's Petworth neighborhood

At least five residents have been displaced after an apartment fire in Northwest, D.C.

The fire broke out around 1:40 a.m. in the 900 block of Shepard Street on the top floor of the four story building.

Fire crews were able to put out the flames around 3 a.m.

Officials say the fire was confined to that one unit but operations were impeded by clutter conditions inside that apartment.

No injuries were reported. Nearby Georgia Avenue was closed temporarily but has since reopened.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
