2 suspects wanted after shooting near D.C. school
Two suspects were seen fleeing the scene of a shooting near a D.C. school that left two people injured, including a child.
WASHINGTON - D.C. police are searching for two suspects following a midday shooting near a public charter school in Northwest D.C. that left two people injured, including a child.
What we know:
Officers responded to an area near E.L. Haynes Public Charter School in Petworth just before noon. They arrived to find a man and a child who had both suffered gunshot wounds.
Both victims were conscious and breathing when they were taken to a local hospital. Information regarding their current conditions has not yet been released.
Investigators said the two suspects involved in the attack were last seen fleeing the area on Lime scooters.
The incident left long-term Petworth residents shocked, as many described the heavy police presence and crime tape as a rare sight for their neighborhood.
"I just came out of my house, going to my physical therapy appointment, and I seen the police here blocking this off," said Willie Burton, who has lived in the neighborhood for over 45 years and noted he had never seen an event like this on his block before.
Lenny Branson, another neighbor, expressed similar dismay.
"This is the first time I’ve actually come down and seen there was a shooting," Branson said. "I’m just disappointed in what’s going on."
Tuesday’s incident marks the second shooting involving a child in the District within 12 hours.
Right after midnight, another child and two adults were shot near Washington Hospital Center at North Capitol Street and Michigan Avenue. D.C. Police reported that the suspects in that earlier incident were three boys, who were also seen riding scooters.
