2-alarm fire in Calvert County displaces 13 families

The Office of the State Fire Marshal is investigating a significant apartment fire that caused extensive damage and displaced numerous residents on Monday. FOX 5 DC's Bob Barnard has the latest.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal is investigating a significant apartment fire that caused extensive damage and displaced numerous residents on Monday. 

What we know:

Fire crews from Calvert County and the surrounding areas responded to the 3900 block of Gordon Stinnett Avenue at 6:36 a.m. on Nov. 17. Flames were seen throughout the courtyard area, eventually spreading into the attic and through the roof. The fire destroyed 14 apartments and displaced approximately 25 occupants. One person was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The fire originated on a first-level balcony in the courtyard area. High winds and the fire’s exterior location contributed to its rapid spread and damage. Deputy State Fire Marshals have found no evidence of a criminal act so far.

The Red Cross has stepped in to assist those displaced by the fire, while the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office is aiding in the investigation.

Fire still under investigation 

What we don't know:

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. All fire companies in Calvert County, including the North Beach Volunteer Fire Department, responded to the scene.

The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, and further details are yet to be released.
