Police make arrest after college basketball player from DC among 3 killed in New Mexico house party shooting

Police have made an arrest after three people, including a college basketball player from D.C., were killed and several others were injured in a shooting at a house party over the weekend in New Mexico.

Authorities say the shooting happened shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday at a house in the city of Hobbs, which is about 300 miles southeast of Albuquerque. Police say 18-year-old Khalil Carter, 24-year-old Kristal Avena and 22-year-old Lamar Lee Kane Jr. of Washington, D.C., died at the scene.

FOX 5 spoke with the father of Kane Jr. who confirmed his son’s death and said his son graduated from Coolidge High School in D.C. where he played basketball. His father said Kane Jr. attended the University of Southwest in New Mexico and played on the basketball team. The Mustang’s team website said he was studying sports management. A GoFundMe website has been established for Kane Jr.

Police say they have arrested 19-year-old Bishop Henderson and charged him with aggravated battery in connection with the case. Henderson is currently being held in the Hobbs City Jail pending arraignment. Police say dditional charges are possible. Officers say four others were injured in the incident.
