Prince George's County shootings injure 2; Suspect in custody
Prince George's County Police are investigating multiple shooting scenes across the county. One person has been taken into custody, and at least two people were injured.
PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. - At least two people were injured and another is in custody Friday after three separate shooting scenes across Prince George's County.
Timeline:
The chaos started to unfold around 2:30 p.m. on Friday, when police started getting reports of a man with a gun near the 5100 block of Pierce Avenue.
Around 2:50 p.m., police said the gunman shot at a 64-year-old man. He was injured after being hit by a piece of glass from a shattered window.
Just before 3 p.m., the suspect crashed a car at the intersection of 67th Avenue and Patterson Road. After crashing the car, officers said, he got out and started shooting, hitting one man.
After that, the same man shot at a woman and stole her car near Kenilworth Avenue and Good Luck Road.
An unarmed, off-duty Prince George's County Police officer witnessed the carjacking, and started to follow the gunman. Officials said the off-duty officer was relaying information about the suspect's location to his wife, who is also an officer, and she forwarded the info to the PGPD.
Off-duty officer followed shooting, carjacking suspect, helping lead to arrest
One person is in custody after allegedly carjacking a woman at gunpoint and shooting at multiple people across Prince George's County. Police said an off-duty officer who witnessed the carjacking followed the suspect and helped officers find and arrest him.
The chase ended on Edmonston Road, where officials said the man got out of the car and started shooting at the off-duty officer. While that was happening, U.S. Park Police officers who had been following the situation on radio arrived on the scene. The gunman tried to fire at them, PGPD said.
"We believe that he was out of bullets. At that time, he dropped the weapon and was taken into custody with no additional shots being fired," said PGPD Chief George Nader.
Three people, including the suspect, were taken to the hospital. Nader said police believe the suspect was injured in the car accident.
‘Vital’ help from off-duty officer

Nader called the actions of the officer who followed the suspect "vital."
"The bravery to follow someone that's armed with an AR-15 rifle that you know has already shot at people and to continue to follow him… I've not seen bravery like that in my 33 years of service," Nader said.
Schools locked down

The University of Maryland also alerted students to investigations into sounds of gunfire near campus. University officials reported a suspect in a dark sedan who fired three shots into the air, then drove off.
