Fires force overnight evacuation of Newark Airport

Officials say a terminal at Newark Liberty Airport terminal was evacuated twice early Monday after a fire that later re-ignited.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey confirmed that fire broke out just after 1 a.m. in a boiler room ceiling in Terminal B. About 200 people were evacuated, mostly from a Cathay Pacific flight that was to board, and the rest were airport staff.

Officials say that the fire was put out around 2 a.m. but rekindled around 3 a.m. and forced another evacuation due to a heavy smoke condition.

The second fire was contained at about 3:45 a.m. but the terminal had not reopened so that it could be ventilated due to smoke hovering throughout the building.

There was no report of any injuries in either incident.
