Officers shoot, kill suspect; woman found shot dead in Alexandria apartment, police say

A suspected gunman was shot and killed by officers early Monday after police say he fatally shot a woman inside an Alexandria apartment.

What we know:

The incident happened around 4 a.m. at an apartment complex on Canterbury Square. Officers responding to a report of a woman shot found a man barricaded inside a room with the victim.

Alexandria Police Chief Tarrick McGuire said the suspect charged at officers during the encounter, prompting two officers to fire their weapons. The man was struck and later died. It was not immediately clear whether he was armed when he advanced toward officers.

The woman was found inside the room with gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
