DNC Night 1: Why was John Kasich there?

While much of the attention in night one of the Democratic National Convention centered around speeches from Sen. Bernie Sanders and former First Lady Michelle Obama, Democrats curiously invited former Ohio Gov. John Kasich, a Republican, to speak as well.
