What does Manchin's departure from Democratic Party mean for West Virginia?

The political makeup of West Virginia has shifted drastically in the past two decades, and now, for the first time in more than a century, no Democrats represent the state in the U.S. Senate. Sen. Joe Manchin officially left the Democratic Party to become an independent, but while Manchin said it was due to his unhappiness with the political extremes, it may also be a strategic move for his own future.
