MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. - A 13-year-old boy was injured in a shooting at Wheaton Mall in Maryland Friday night, according to Montgomery County Police.
What we know:
Officers responded to the mall around 6 p.m. for the reported shooting.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the 17-year-old was in the area of Cinnabon on the lower level of the mall. Police said the teen stood up, pulled out a gun and fired several rounds, hitting the 13-year-old in the leg.
The victim was taken to an area hospital and is in stable condition, officers said Friday night.
The 17-year-old fled the area toward Dick’s Sporting Goods where he encountered an armed security officer. The officer ordered the teen to the ground and held them there until county police arrived.
A firearm was recovered from the scene, police said.
"Gun violence is something that we have a high focus on, on the recovery of illegal firearms and hopefully preventing these circumstances and these disputes from turning into something like this," Commander David Smith said.
Why you should care:
While police say there is no longer an active threat in the mall or the surrounding area, they recommended the public avoid the mall while officers investigate the shooting.
A heavy police presence is expected to continue at the mall Friday night. As of 8 p.m., the lower level of the mall remains closed for the investigation.
