Teen dead in apparent suicide; Loudoun County deputy also fired shot

A 15-year-old boy died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Loudoun County at the same time that a deputy fired a shot.

A teenager died by suicide after an encounter with deputies in Purcellville Monday afternoon, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff's office.

What we know:

The teen allegedly suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound before a deputy fired a shot as well.

Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman said the 15-year-old boy was reported as a runaway. The teen’s father reported the guns were missing from their home.

A deputy spotted the teen on the street, leading to the encounter.

The unidentified teen attended Loudoun Valley High School. The principal sent a statement to the community, saying the administration is deeply saddened by the news of the teen’s death.

What they're saying:

"A traumatic event can evoke a wide range of emotions, and I know that the Loudoun County community shares in their family’s loss and grief. We are sending this note to make parents aware so they may inform their students. We are asking that you talk to your child to the degree you feel is needed," the letter read.

Sheriff Chapman said the teen was known to law enforcement, but would not say how.

"I’m very sad," said neighbor Kelly Cool. "I don’t know who this person is, but my prayers are with their family, and just, you know, as a community. I know that everyone will come together for whoever it is. We have a great community here, very supportive."

Images from SKYFOX show several law enforcement vehicles blocking the roadway at the Purcellville/Roundhill town line off West Main Street. East Loudoun Street, between Simmons Road and Lakefield Road in Round Hill, is closed due to the investigation.
