Driver killed, passenger hurt after car strikes pole, overturns in Silver Spring

A driver is dead and a passenger is injured after a car lost control, struck a utility pole and overturned in Montgomery County early Saturday morning.

What we know:

Montgomery County Police and Fire Rescue crews responded to the area of Randolph Road and Bluhill Road in Silver Spring around 4:58 a.m. for a report of a single-vehicle collision.

Investigators determined that the driver of a 1990 Honda Civic lost control of the vehicle for reasons that remain unclear. The car struck a utility pole and flipped over, bringing "live" electrical wires down onto the vehicle and trapping someone underneath.

First responders attempted life-saving measures, but the male driver was pronounced dead at the scene from his injuries. An adult male passenger was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

What we don't know:

Authorities have not publicly released the name of the driver who was killed, pending notification of next of kin. Police have also not released the identity of the passenger or provided an update on his condition.

Investigators have not yet determined what caused the vehicle to lose control before striking the pole.

What's next:

The Montgomery County Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is actively investigating the crash.

The downed utility pole and live electrical wires forced officials to shut down both sides of Randolph Road while crews cleared the wreckage and made the area safe. Police said additional details will be released as the investigation moves forward.
