Winter Storm Watch issued as wintry mix threatens areas west of DC region

WASHINGTON - Weather that is more typical of typical of December than mid-November could be coming our way. As cold weather comes through, it looks like western parts of the area could see some sleet, snow and ice in the next couple days.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for western Maryland, western parts of Northern Virginia and parts of West Virginia.

Allegany and Garrett Counties in Maryland are under the watch through Friday morning.

In Virginia, areas surrounding the Blue Ridge, including Frederick, Page, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Augusta, Highland and Warren Counties are under a Winter Weather Watch until Wednesday morning.

"The areas we're concerned about are the usual cold spots to our west, those that are are a little higher in elevation," said FOX 5's Sue Palka.

She added that with the temperatures and the precipitation, "It may be that Thursday is a little bit dicey for all of us."

This could impact travel throughout the area.

Wednesday into Thursday "may be all day a mixed bag of precipitation," said Palka.

A part of the D.C. metro area could see a wintry mix Thursday morning -- maybe enough to cover grassy areas before turning into rain.

"With the cold air in place and rather trapped by the mountains, that's where the concern comes in as we head on into Thursday morning," Palka said.
