Metro unveils commemorative SmarTrip card honoring Capitals' Stanley Cup victory

After Washington Capitals players T.J. Oshie and Matt Niskanen took the Metro to get Game 3 and 4 of the Stanley Cup Final, Metro made a promise to create a commemorative SmarTrip card if they brought home the Stanley Cup. That promise has become reality as Metro has released the design of the limited-edition card on the eve of the Caps' victory parade.

The SmarTrip card features a photo of the team together on the ice with the Stanley Cup after their championship-clinching Game 5 victory.

"We are excited to honor the players who rode Metro to the games and the entire Caps team for this historic championship," said Metro General Manager and CEO Paul Wiedefeld. "Like the Caps, Metro brings the region together, and this special SmarTrip card is a great way for riders, fans and players to show their Caps pride."

This is the first time Metro has created a limited-edition commemorative SmarTrip card celebrating a D.C. sports championship. Metro said this honor is usually reserved for presidential inaugurations and other events of national significance.

This is the first championship in the four major North American sports for D.C. since the Washinton Redskins won the Super Bowl in 1992. It's the Capitals' first Stanley Cup title in the franchise's 44-year history.

The cards will be sold for the standard value of $10 - $2 for the cost of the card and $8 in Metro fare included on the card.

The limited-edition SmarTrip cards are only available online and will take a few weeks to be delivered. To purchase the cards, go to https://bit.ly/2JIxm5l

Can't make it down to the parade? You can watch FOX 5's coverage of the parade beginning at 10 a.m. on TV, Facebook, Twitter, online and the FOX 5 App. If you're heading to the parade, be sure to use #Fox5Caps when tagging your photos and videos on social media.
