Thieves attempt to steal ATM near Nationals Park using stolen U-Haul truck

- Police are investigating after would-be thieves unsuccessfully tried to steal an automatic teller machine near Nationals Park using a stolen truck.

The incident happened near Half Street and N Street at around 4:23 a.m. Friday. FOX 5’s Bob Barnard says a security guard at the stadium heard what he says sounded like four loud explosions. When the guard investigated, he says four suspects ran to a nearby pickup truck and drove off.

Police believe the brazen suspects stole a U-Haul truck and used it to ram a PNC ATM that sat just outside the Center Field gate near the ticket booths.

Police say no money or other property were stolen during the incident.

The suspects fled the scene in a tan-colored pickup truck, according to police.

D.C. police have released surveillance video showing a suspect getting out of the passenger side of the U-Haul truck pickup truck as well as the getaway pickup truck apparently leaving the area.

Barnard reports that earlier this year, a group of suspects used a stolen U-Haul truck to steal ATMs in Prince George’s County. The vehicle was later found abandoned in Southeast D.C. with four machines inside.
