VDOT roadside worker fatally struck on I-95 south in southern Virginia

Investigators say a Virginia state road worker has died after being struck on I-95 Saturday morning.

Virginia State Police say they were called for a pedestrian-involved crash just after 11 a.m. on southbound I-95 at mile-marker 35 in Prince George County, near Carson, about 40 miles south of Richmond.

Investigators say 25-year-old Dustin Warden from Caron, Va. was a VDOT contractor employed by DBI services when he was struck by a car while working on repairing potholes.

They say Samantha Hughes from Wilmington, NC was driving a 2015 Honda Civic when she took her eyes off the road and struck Warden, who was out of his vehicle setting up a shoulder closure for the mobile work zone.

According to Virginia State Police, Warden died from to his injuries at the scene.

Police say Hughes is being charged with reckless driving. The crash investigation is ongoing.
