Va. cop accused of inappropriate acts with children kills self

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. - Police say a Manassas City police detective has died after he committed suicide as officers were trying to serve him with a search and arrest warrant.

He was under investigation for having an inappropriate relationship with a minor.

According to police, 39-year-old David Abbott Jr. barricaded himself inside his home and ultimately shot and killed himself.

As a Manassas City police detective, Abbott served on the Northern Virginia-Washington D.C. Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

But police say Abbott was being investigated for accusations of soliciting sexual acts from a minor through phone, text, social media and email.

They believe the relationship started at a local hockey league where Abbott was also a coach. The victim was 11 years old when it all started in 2013.

During the investigation, detectives discovered there was a second victim that dated back to 2008. This alleged victim was also 13 years old when the inappropriate communication started and also affiliated with the Potomac Patriots youth hockey team.

Their website does not name Abbott as a coach, but the team did put out a statement which reads:

"The Potomac Patriots organization is saddened by the events that transpired today relating to the passing of Coach David Abbott. We are taking steps to ensure that the needs and well being of the club's children, families and staff are being attended to at this time. Due to the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mr. Abbott's death, we are unable to comment about this matter any further at this time."
