Stafford County authorities investigating Benton Gayle Middle social media threat

Police and school officials in Stafford County are investigating after they received information of a threatening message posted on social media concerning an area school.

Stafford County Public Schools say they became aware the threat concerning T. Benton Gayle Middle School over the weekend.

Police say the post, which reportedly contained a picture of a handgun with a threatening message, which also reportedly targeted Thornburg Middle School in Spotsylvania County, is being investigated by both Spotsylvania and Stafford County deputies.

While Spotsylvania County schools are closed on Monday for President's Day, deputies will provide extra security at the school.

Police, as well as the administration at Gayle Middle School say they will continue to investigate the source of the threat to maintain vigilance and provide for student safety.

"We are taking this matter very seriously and ask for your help. If your child knows of the person who posted the threatening message, contact school administrators. Please encourage your student to report any threats to the school," says Stafford County Schools.
