Spotsylvania County police investigating social media threat, 2 Virginia middle schools targeted

Spotsylvania County detectives are investigating a threat on social media that was targeted at Thornburg Middle School.

The post, which reportedly contained a picture of a handgun with a threatening message, according to investigators also targeted T. Benton Gayle Middle School in Stafford County.

Spotsylvania County Public Schools says school administration immediately contacted the Sheriff's Office and an investigation was launched to determine the individual responsible and nature of this post.

Spotsylvania and Stafford County Sheriff's say they are working together to investigate the origin of the post.

As a makeup for a snow day on January 5, schools are open Monday for President's Day.

Spotsylvania police say there will be additional Sheriff's Office Deputies on the Thornburg Middle School campus as a precaution.

Detectives are asking anyone who has information about who may have originally made the post, to contact police at (540) 582-5822.
