Police: Woman randomly shot while driving in Rockville

ROCKVILLE, Md. - Authorities say a woman was hospitalized after she reported being shot while driving in Rockville Monday night.

Rockville City police say at around 7:50 p.m., they received multiple calls for reports of up to seven shots fired in the 300 block of Martins Lane. Officers responding to the area did not find any signs of a shooting.

However, police say a female victim contacted them seven minutes later stating that she had been wounded after driving on that street while on her way to pick up her adult son from the Rockville Metro station.

"She heard a loud noise and thought something had struck her car," said Rockville City Police Maj. Bob Rappoport. "She briefly stopped. She thought maybe she had struck a deer."

She continued on to the Metro station where she realized she had been shot. Her son then drove her to the Rockville Volunteer Fire Department a few blocks away where firefighters tended to her wound and took her to the hospital.

According to police, the woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Rappoport said one bullet struck the driver's side of the vehicle.

"We are treating this as a random shooting," said Rappoport. "We have no evidence of any other gunshots in this area previously or since then. So we think it's a very isolated incident."

Police say they have searched the athletic fields nearby Rock Terrace School and have canvassed surrounding neighborhoods immediately after the shooting and again on Tuesday morning.

There is no suspect description at this time.
