Mayor Bowser on Wasserman Schultz: 'It was the right decision for her to step aside'

WASHINGTON - D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser endorsed Hillary Clinton before the primary in the District of Columbia. But in our Facebook Live interview on Monday with FOX 5, she weighed in on the apparent efforts of Democratic National Committee head Debbie Wasserman Schultz to favor Clinton over Sen. Bernie Sanders during the primary after party emails were recently leaked.

"Certainly there have been questions about the DNC's role in the primary campaign for many, many months," the mayor said.

Bowser said the decision of Wasserman Schultz to resign is one she supports.

"The focus of this convention should be is how do we get Hillary Clinton elected and the nation understanding what our candidates' positions are," Bowser said. "If anyone distracts from it, they should think about the party and think about our country, and so I do think it was the right decision for her to step aside."

Mayor Bowser spent a day at the Republican National Convention last week and is heading to the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday. She has been focused on pushing D.C. statehood at each convention and working to convince others to support it.

But is D.C. statehood the right priority for the mayor now or should she be focusing on other areas in the city such as crime and public safety?

"We focus on all things in the city 100 percent of the time," she said. "We are working on schools and public safety and neighborhood and opportunities for people. Certainly any homicide is too many, but as big cities go, we feel like we stack up against all big cities in terms of the safety of our neighborhoods."
