Heavy rain across the area on Thursday flooded streets, swamped cars and opened sinkholes.

In most places the flood waters have receded, says FOX 5's Melanie Alnwick, but they left behind a dangerous mess. In Vienna, Virginia police were forced to close a section of roadway after a sinkhole appeared. The sinkhole opened near Wolftrap Road and Lord Fairfax Road.

The downpours also caused flooding conditions as water spilled onto Waples Road in Fairfax County causing hazardous conditions for drivers. In Prince William County, Interstate 66 experienced flooding conditions as did parts of Forestdale Road in the Woodbridge area.

In Albemarle County in central Virginia, officials say one person was found dead after their car was swept away by floodwaters near Charlottesville. Rescue crew are continuing to search for a second person who was in the vehicle.

Wet weather is expected to stay in the area through the weekend. GET THE FULL FORECAST!
