Elevator problems cause Washington Monument closure

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Washington Monument was closed again Sunday and will be closed Monday morning because of what the National Park Service said are power issues related to the elevator.

The park service announced on Twitter on Sunday that the monument would be closed again Monday morning for repairs to the elevator power supply and will reopen as soon as repairs are done.
The monument has been closed several times in recent months because of elevator issues -- most recently in early April, when the elevator broke down twice in one week. In those cases, people were visiting the monument at the time and had to walk down hundreds of stairs.
