Arrest made in murder of prominent local athlete

OXON HILL, Md. (FOX 5 DC) - Prince George's County Police announced the arrest of 21-year-old Rondell Fletcher Thursday. He's accused of shooting and killing 22-year-old Tyamonee Johnson in Oxon Hill last weekend.

Johnson's death is being felt from Montgomery County, where he was a standout high school football player, to New York, where he was a graduate student.

"That is my guy," said Ray Butler, the assistant head football coach at Bullis School in Potomac, who still has two pictures of Johnson hanging on his office wall.

Johnson, a new dad, had a lot to live for. In May, he'd finished his undergrad at Wagner College in New York before sticking around to play as a fifth-year member of the football team while working on his MBA.

"He was just excited, you know? Becoming a father and watching his young child grow," Butler said Thursday afternoon.

But while home on break, on December 30th, police say Johnson was shot and killed in Oxon Hill. They call it "domestic-related" and say Fletcher shot Johnson while they argued over a third person.

Butler said he'll remember Johnson as a well-rounded, educated, and athletic young man who could light up a room with his smile.

"We lost an amazing young man that probably would've changed the world," he said.

A GoFundMe account has been started for Johnson's daughter.
