2 injured after car crashes into Giant Food store in Leisure World Plaza shopping center

A car driven by an elderly man crashed into a Giant Food store in the Leisure World Plaza shopping center in Silver Spring Thursday afternoon.

According to fire officials, an 88-year-old man operating a 2002 Buick Century struck the building near the front entrance at around 2:55 p.m. An 84-year-old female passenger in the vehicle was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

No pedestrians, customers or employees were struck in the crash.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesperson Pete Piringer said a bystander was also taken to the hospital after inhaling fumes during the incident. His injury is considered non-life-threatening.

Photos from the scene showed heavy damage to the storefront window nearby the cash registers.

Piringer said the store will be closed for several hours to assess and repair the damage.
