Early rain causes flooding, brings down tree with afternoon thunderstorms expected

Morning showers brought a tree down and flooded some roadways early Monday with heavier storms expected this evening. The rain pushed out of the area quickly, however, humid and unstable air will bring the possibility of thunderstorms to the area by later this afternoon.

Temperatures should climb to 80 degrees, but the warm air and a western cold front could bring thunderstorms for the evening rush hour.

Once the storms move out of the area this evening, sunny skies and temperatures in the 70s are expected for Tuesday.

The heavy overnight and morning rain brought down a tree on Fernwood Road near Hillmead Road in Bethesda. The downed tree also took down power lines.

High standing water was also a problem along westbound Route 50 near Bowie. Some lanes were closed because of the flooding conditions.
