Beach Drive road rehabilitation project to begin Thursday

A major roadway in the district is shutting down for repairs -- and it could cause some significant problems.

Drivers will feel the impact of the beach drive rehabilitation project. Starting Thursday Beach Drive will be closed from Tilden Street to the National Zoo tunnel.

The project is expected to be completed within three years. Workers will be repaving a six and a half mile section of beach drive through rock creek parkway.

The national park service says about 12 million cars use Beach Drive each year and it's been in desperate need of repairs.

The construction will take place in four phases - each phase is expected to last about eight months.
