'Purple Rain' returning to theaters starting this weekend for limited time

In the wake of his death, Prince fans will be able to see him back on the big screen this weekend. AMC Theatres will screen the 1984 film Purple Rain at 86 of its participating theaters.

The movie will be playing for a limited time from Saturday, April 23 until Thursday, April 28

Prince made his film debut in Purple Rain, a musical drama that grossed nearly $70 million at the box office. Prince won an Oscar for Best Original Score from his performance in the movie along with a Grammy for Best Album of Instrumental Score Written for a Motion Picture or Television Special.

The soundtrack for the film also topped the Billboard album chart for 24 consecutive weeks and songs from the album, "When Doves Cry" and "Let's Go Crazy," also topped the singles charts.

In the D.C. area, Purple Rain will be playing at the Magic Johnson Capital Center 12 theater in Largo, Maryland and the Hoffman Center 22 theater in Alexandria, Virginia.
