FALLS CHURCH, Va. - With less than 24 hours to go until Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final, the DMV is in #ALLCAPS mode.
The Walter E. Washington Convention Center in the District is lit up red with the Washington Capitals logo while the Francis Case Memorial Bridge is also lit up red. Even Metro is getting in on the fandom with “GO CAPS” running across their electronic billboards and buses.
One diehard Caps fan is Wes Johnson. Fans likely know his booming voice because Johnson has been the announcer for the Washington Capitals for 18 years.
“Every home game, I’m sitting in the penalty box,” said Johnson. “I’m the fourth bald spot from the left if you’re looking for me.”
He grew up going to games with his dad and managed to snag his dream job after other voice gigs.
“It’s just nuts and I love it,” he added.
The Capitals fandemonium has gotten to Johnson too. He has a brand new red jacket for the Stanley Cup Final and sticks to all his rituals, including eating the "Wes Johnson" sandwich (grilled roast beef, melted muenster, coleslaw, Russian dressing, grilled sourdough) at Celebrity Delly in Falls Church.
“How did that start?” he asked himself. “I don’t know, but if we’re all collectively going mad as a city, then I welcome it.”
The Caps have been close before – but never like this.
“The sustained energy of Capital One Arena could be harnessed and light the city for the rest of the year,” Johnson said.
