World War II veteran celebrates 100th birthday

"Your age is only a number. Keep moving."

Those are the words that a decorated World War II veteran has said all during his life, and they hold true as he celebrates a milestone birthday.

On Saturday, residents, friends and family members will hold a 100th birthday celebration for Edward Murphy at the Garden Plaza at Lawrenceville senior living community.

Ed Murphy was born on February 16, 1919.

In 1942, he married Pauline Quigley, and they remained married for 66 years until her death in 2008. Together, they had 6 children.

In 1944, Ed join the Army during World War II where he served for 2 years. As a member of the Army's 29th Division, he earned the Purple Heart.

In 1947, Ed joined the New York City Police Department where he served in the department's 106th Division in Queens for 20 years.

After that, Ed became a judge for civil cases for 8 years before his retirement.

In 2009, Ed moved to Garden Plaza in Lawrenceville. Facility officials say he swims every day and takes part in exercise classes. He has also written a series of mini-plays that he has directed with residents participating.

His birthday celebration will take place from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Garden Plaza at Lawrenceville.
