Water-main break creates havoc in Montgomery County on Friday

Thousands of people sat in bumper to bumper traffic during the evening rush hour because of a water-main break on Friday.

The break occurred on a stretch of New Hampshire Avenue in the Hillandale section of Montgomery County, between Rodney and Chalmers Roads.

Crews responded to the scene around noon after the pavement began to buckle.

Once they arrived, they shut down the northbound lanes.

They say the pipe split along the length, rather than around its circumference, making it a particularly challenging break to fix.

Crews hope to have the repairs completed sometime after midnight.
