NORTH TEXAS (FOX 5 DC) - Actor Peter Mayhew – who was made famous for his portrayal of beloved Star Wars character Chewbacca – has died at the age of 74.
Mayhew’s family confirmed his passing through @TheWookieRoars Twitter account – named for the iconic character. They say he died April 30, surrounded by his family.

Mayhew played Chewbacca in Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi – and several other movies in the famous franchise.
He is survived by his wife Angie and his three children.
A memorial service will be held June 29 for friends and family, and a memorial for fans will be set up in early December in Los Angeles.
In lieu of gifts and flowers, his family asked fans donate to his foundation so they can continue his efforts to help the community.
