UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (FOX 5 DC) - A man from Baltimore was identified as the pedestrian struck and killed in an overnight collision in Upper Marlboro.
Based on a preliminary investigation, troopers say that 20 year old Jewell Reid of Baltimore was walking in the fast lane of northbound Maryland Route 301 (Crain Highway)south of Maryland Route 4 (Pennsylvania Ave) at approximately 11:15 PM when he was struck by a Chevy Tahoe driven by an Upper Marlboro woman. It is unclear if Reid was attempting to cross Crain Highway at the time of the collision or was walking parallel with the roadway. Alcohol is not considered to be a factor in the collision at this time.
Northbound Crain Highway was closed for approximately 3 hours while troopers and a collision reconstructionist from the Maryland State Police conducted the on scene investigation. Members of Prince George’s County Fire and EMS and personnel from Maryland State Highway assisted at the scene.
This is the second pedestrian fatality in a week on Crain Highway in Upper Marlboro. On May 19, 26 year old Adrian Harris, of Waldorf, Maryland was walking southbound in the left travel lane of Crain Highway near Rosaryville Road with his back to traffic when he was struck and killed. Alcohol was not a factor in that collision. Both collisions have taken place during the hours of darkness.
Maryland State Police remind citizens that pedestrians should be sure to wear clothing or other accessories that are brightly colored or reflective for safety, especially when walking or running along roadways during hours of darkness and follow all pedestrian traffic laws. This includes utilizing crosswalks when available, walking or running against (facing) the direction of traffic, and obeying pedestrian crossing signals. Motorist should always be on the lookout and attentive to pedestrians and bicyclists along the roadway.
