Pay It Forward: DC woman turns grief from son's murder into opportunity to give to homeless

A DC woman is turning her grief from her son's murder into an opportunity to give to the homeless.

LeShawn Weathers' son Anthony was shot and killed when he was 25 years old and his murder still remains unsolved six years later.

"When he dropped me off at the house I didn't know that was going to be my last time seeing my child," Weathers said. "After he was killed I decided to go out and give even more and I started giving to the homeless."

She started Anthony's Angels in honor of her son. Weathers collects cans around her Southeast neighborhood and transforms them into coasters and ashtrays. She then gives them away for donations to support her efforts to help the homeless.

"I experienced homelessness myself," she said. "Everybody has a story so I went out to hear their stories and to teach them workshops on how to survive on the streets, to show them that there's always hope and to keep pushing."

It's a mission Weathers said is to honor her son, who was kind, giving and caring.

"I let my grief turn into something greater and just give back because that's my angel and that's what he would want me to keep pushing and that's what I'm going to do," Weathers explained.

FOX 5 and Easterns Automotive Group teamed up to help Weathers continue to Pay It Forward. Joel Bassam from Easterns Automotive Group presented Weathers with dozens of coats, hand warmers, hats and gloves to help her continue the great work Anthony's Angels performs in the community.
