Officer-involved shooting in Haymarket, teenage boy killed

- Prince William County police are investigating following an officer-involved shooting that left a teenage boy dead Friday morning.

Investigators say it happened outside of a home in the 6800 block of Hartzell Hill Lane in Haymarket, Virginia, at around 10:45 a.m. No officers were injured, but police say a 15-year-old boy was shot and pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say officers initially responded to the house for a possible hostage situation after receiving information that a person had a bomb strapped to his chest and was holding a family member hostage.

After arriving at the scene, police located the teenager with a crowbar. Police say one of their officers fired several shots at the boy, striking him in the upper body, after he began walking aggressively towards police in a threatening manner and refused several orders to drop the crowbar.

Officers attempted to provide first aid to the 15-year-old boy after the shooting, but he died at the scene, according to police.

FOX 5 has learned that the officers involved in this incident did not have body cameras. We are told all officers in the department are expected to have them by the end of the year.

Hartzell Hill Lane was closed as a result of the investigation, and school buses were not allowed to travel on the road as a result Friday afternoon. Parents of Battlefield High School, Reagan Middle School and Haymarket Elementary School were asked to meet their child's bus at Market Ridge and Heights Way.
