Wednesday Snow Timeline: Morning snow transitions to mix / rain into the evening

A winter weather system that moved across the D.C. metro area Wednesday brought steady snow and a wintry mix of sleet and rain that created hazardous driving conditions around the region. The FOX 5 Weather team began tracking the storm threat last week. Many schools across the region made the call to cancel classes on Tuesday night ahead of Wednesday's storm with several calling for delays into Thursday.

FOX 5's Caitlin Roth says today's snow put the D.C. area seasonal total at 16.6 inches and officially above the average yearly snowfall of 15.4 inches.

Airport snow totals at Reagan National reached about 2.6 inches. At Dulles International, snow totals came in a little under five inches at 4.7. At BWI Marshall, snow totals came in around 4.5 inches.

FOX 5's Sue Palka says a light, freezing drizzle will continue into the evening and night across the area.

Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories have been put into place across the region until 7 p.m. Wednesday night.

Roth says rising temperatures into the evening hours will make the possibility of a refreeze unlikely.
