Several water main breaks left thousands of residents in the Arlington area without water early Thursday morning.

The breaks were reported Wednesday night in the area of Columbia Pike near S. Frederick Street and near S. Dinwiddle Street. A break was also reported along S. Park Drive south of Route 50.

Repairs were started around midnight. At the height of the water service outages, about 4000 customers were impacted. Around 5:30 a.m., the Virginia Department of Environmental Services said all three breaks had been repaired and water service was restored but later said work was continuing on the break along S. Park Drive.

Road closures impacted commuters and residents but was mainly isolated to side streets.

The department said between 20 and 50 customers along S. Park Drive remained without service by 6:15 a.m. and they expect full service to be restored by 10 a.m.
