17 people transported as a precaution after UMD Chemical and Nuclear Engineering Building fire

Students, staff, and emergency personnel were transported from the scene of a fire at the University of Maryland's Chemical and Nuclear Engineering Building as a precaution on Wednesday.

According to the Prince George's County fire department, four students, one contractor, one employee, eight Prince George's County firefighters, two college police officers, and an assistant fire marshal were transported.

The department spokesperson did not say whether any of the people who were transported were injured.

The building remains closed, and the fire department is still at the scene. Officials say the fire is out.

They say the fire inside of a classroom was ignited by a chemical reaction.

They are asking people to avoid the area.
